How
do we know Hasbro was going to release dolls in 1988?
We have the Hasbro 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalog.
We have the characters and fashions added to the
show -- and pictures sent from Hasbro to Sunbow
to show them what the new dolls and fashions would
look like.
And we also have ebay.com - many of the prototype
fashions have been sold on ebay.
Hasbro
would send Sunbow images of the new toys, so they
could be added to the show. We do know that all these
images where sent at the same time, and before the
end of April 1987. Four of these dolls did show up
in the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalog.
Hollywood Jem, Stingers, etc., were not but more
then likely would have been pictured in the Toy Fair
Catalog if Jem was not canceled. Hollywood Jem was
described in the French 1988 Hasbro Catalog, but American
Beauty Jem was pictured. Both Hollywood Jem and the
Stingers were listed on the 1988 French Distribution
Schedule.

Riot of the Stingers
Rapture of the Stingers
Minx of the Stingers
The Stingers are
the new band introduced in 1988. They were the
new rival band, as Hasbro fazed out the Misfits.
Riot, the lead singer would be the second male
doll in the Jem line. Rio is the only other
male. Here Riot is shown with a black version
of Shana's guitar. Rapture as black version
of Roxy's guitar, and Minx has a black version
of the "Video Madness" tambourine.

Motor Scooter with detachable instruments
This
Jem is wearing fluffy slippers, and what looks
like a robe and pajama bottoms.
Vanity with FM radio
It looks like this
fashion and playset may have been specially designed
to be sold as a set.
This may be replacing the Roadsters because it
has an FM radio. It could have been a perfect
playset for the Hollywood Jem theme.
Pretend Video Camera / Stage
This stage playset
may have been a replacement for the Star Stage.
It seems like Hasbro was trying to create less
expensive playsets, like the New Wave Waterbed.
