How
do we know Hasbro was going to release dolls in 1988?
We have the Hasbro 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalog.
We have the characters and fashions added to the
show -- and pictures sent from Hasbro to Sunbow
to show them what the new dolls and fashions would
look like.
And we also have ebay.com - many of the prototype
fashions have been sold on ebay.
Recently
a lot of the Matching Medley prototypes have shown
up on ebay. Besides those fashions, there has been
many other 1988 Smashin' Fashions, 1988 On Stage Fashions,
a 1988 Music Is Magic Fashion, and even a New Pizzazz
fashion.
Below are image from the auctions. The fashion tags
and/or pictures sold with the fashions let us know
which fashions group each fashion should belong in.
There is usually a log number that is on the tags,
these numbers helped Hasbro keep track of which fashion
was which. It also gives us a date the fashion was
originally logged. Ex. 609128-01M is 6 09 12 8-01M.
The first number is the year - "6"=1986.
the 2nd two numbers are the month
- "09"=Sept.
4th and 5th number are the day - "12"=12th.
6th number is reference to the order the fashion
are put into the log for that day. - "8"
"-01M" is the version
The version number is usually low for the prototypes
that are in the design department, usually under 10.
Slightly higher number are from the Engineering Pilot
stage, when the fine details are worked out. Really
high numbers "-149M" should be prototypes
sent from the factory to get approved, or to make
changes.
I have included the sellers name as reference ...
seller may not be the original owner of fashions and
dolls. I put the date the auction ended, and the winning
amount for amusement. I am not including the winners
name, I would like to keep them anonymous.

Updated/Correction:
It seems that around Nov. 1986 this Silver dress
might have been the lead fashion for Hollywood
Jem, the fashion that was to be sold with the
doll. But by April 1987, Hasbro sent a Pink dress
(above) to Sunbow as the lead. This dress may
have come on a new doll, but was not the lead
Hollywood Jem dress. The designer of this fashion
was under the impression this dress would have
been the lead fashion. Both fashions are in the
Hollywood Jem episodes.

Updated/Correction:
This was a new fashion/doll for the 1988 Pizzazz.
Both the dress and the doll design (make-up
and hair) were approved, it sounds like the
face mold was undecided when she was put on
hold. Before the head mold was approved Pizzazz
was put on hold -- not canceled, but just put
on hold and still a possibility for release.
She does have the same head mold as this Jerrica
and Rapture. The Jerrica is really Hollywood
Jem, but like the Pizzazz, the mold was not
approved. More then likely the Pizzazz would
have been sold with the Rapture head mold, but
Hollywood Jem may have come with the Rockin'
Romance Jem/American Beauty head mold. It doesn't
seem likely that Jem and rival dolls would share
the same head mold.

This
has to be the biggest Jem find EVER! The complete
set of Stingers! You will notice that they have
different names, most of changed later. I think
the most exciting thing about this auction is
we know when the Stinger were in development
... before Jem saw her first Christmas, before
Glitter'n Gold Jem came out. This tells us that
the Stingers were not a replacement for the
Misfits, because of bad selling. The Stingers
were developed before the final numbers were
in for 1986.
You will also notice that the
fashions are basically the same as the above
pictures from Sunbow ... It seems that they
are the exact fashions with a few changes. And
of course Riot and Rapture both have new head
molds. So Riot was not going to have Rio's head
mold, and he was not going to have Rob's head
mold either. You may notice that eyes are very
close to Rob's eyes (from Maxie.) But his head
is the same size as Rio's head.

Updated/Correction: This head was approved
for Rapture and both Raptures head are factory
painted, suggesting the factory was getting ready
to produced Rapture and the rest of the Stingers
-- much further into production then originally
thought.
