5205-32 - TREASURE HUNT
Marx, Christy & Guon, Ellen
In the commentary for Treasure Hunt (on
the Rhino DVD - Jem Season 3: part 1) Christy Marx said
that Allerton Park was inspiration behind the mazes of
Treasure Hunt. Loving Allerton Park myself, I got goose
bumps hearing her talk about the park. So I decided to
make a very short road trip to take pictures of the park
to share with the Jem Community.
I have been to Allerton Park many many times. The first
time might have been right around the time Jem was coming
out. I was mesmerized and inspired by the "The Death
of the Last Centaur" at that very young age. I was
the lead in a short student film, shot at the park. I
also was the photographer for a friends wedding in the
park ... it was beautiful fairytale wedding. It's amazing
you're in the middle of corn fields, and all of a sudden
you're in this magical place. Just walking into the park
you will feel completely relaxed, loose all cares and
worries ... and gain a wealth of inspiration.
My dad just told me that in 1966 the family was just driving
around the area and saw a sign for the Lost Gardens, so
they stopped to see what the Lost Gardens were. He was
amazed at all these statues in the small clearing out
in the middle of the woods. He said that was his best
experience at the park, before he knew what Allerton Park
really was. Sad to say, I believe the Lost Gardens were
let go, and have become wilderness now. I know one of
the statues was moved next to the visitor center, I'm
not sure what happened with the rest.
I think one of the most fascinating things about Allerton
Park is the history of Robert Allerton, his love of art,
his love of nature and gardens, and his Mardi Gras/Carnival
like parties.
