JEM vs. Moondreamers (Hasbro 1987)

The Moondreamers where part of My Little Pony and Friends, with glow in the dark hair.

To me, they have always looked like a smaller version of Jem. With the same types of hair colors and styles, the fabrics, and the clothing design. Moondreamers came out in 1987, Jem's second year. Dolls where planned for 1988, but like Jem the line was dropped.

In 2003, I told a Hasbro employee that these dolls look like smaller versions of Jem, and that I wondered if they where some type of unused Jem dolls, she said it could be likely since the same people worked on both lines.

I learned that one designer created a majority of the Moondreamers and Starfinders. And another designer took the designs and prototyped the Moondrearmers fashions -- this designer was especially skilled with smaller scale clothing.

Glizy Gleamer seems very similar to a Jem/Jerrica doll and feels a little like varation on Amerian Beauty Jem to me.

correction/information from the Facebook Comments feed below:

Stefanie Clark Eskander · Sr. Staff Designer at Spin Master
"Interesting insights into Moondreamers, but incorrect info about them having anything to do with Jem. I was a designer on both Jem & Moondreamers, and they were totally separate. I designed the unproduced 1988 dolls (except Sunsparklers & Sunfinders). While it's probably true that there was a single sewer (samplemaker) who made the prototypes for these little dolls, they were not designed by that person or persons, just sewed.

I think one of the reasons that they might look similar to Jem, was because of the hairstyles, fashions, and colors of the day. This WAS the 80s, after all, LOL!"

Update: as of October 20, 2011 Hasbro has updated the Moondreamer trademark.
